During the early hours of New Year’s Day 2025, 42-year-old US National Shamsud-Din Jabbar intentionally rammed a rented truck into pedestrians on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. The attack killed 14 people and injured a further 35 - although fatalities could have been substantially higher if the improvised explosive devices (IED) that Jabbar had set up had detonated. Investigators believe that the Islamic State inspired the perpetrator, but he ultimately acted alone.
This article outlines the various costs of the attack and Jabbar’s financial profile.
Attack Details
Based in Houston, Texas, Jabbar drove to New Orleans on December 31, 2024, and arrived at the Airbnb he rented at around 10 pm. In an effort to destroy evidence, he set fire to the Airbnb at 12:17 am and then began driving toward Bourbon Street. At 1:53 am and 2:20 am, Jabbar placed two coolers containing IEDs in the New Orleans French Quarter neighbourhood. At 3:15 am, his truck bypassed police barricades and began striking individuals for three street blocks before the truck crashed into a crane. Jabbar then got out of the car and began shooting at police, injuring two officers before he was shot and killed.
