Mohammad Moiz Omar, the man who attacked a Mississauga Mosque in March 2022 with bear spray and a hatchet, was recently sentenced to 8 years in prison. Omar was convicted of administering a noxious substance with intent to endanger life or cause bodily harm; assault with a weapon; and mischief to religious property with motivation of bias, prejudice or hate based on religion – crimes that were also established as terrorist activity.  The attack was low-cost with rudimentary methods, comparable to other lone-actor attacks conducted in Canada. Learn more about the case below.

Attack Details

At approximately 6:55 a.m. on March 19, 2022, Omar entered the Dar Al-Tawheed Islamic Centre and applied bear spray toward congregants while swinging a hatchet. After finishing one of the spray cans and pulling out another, several worshippers rushed Omar and successfully subdued him until police arrived. Thankfully, none of the victims were seriously injured. Nonetheless, several individuals suffered side effects from the bear spray, and damage to the mosque cost approximately $16,000 to repair.
