At approximately 6:55 a.m. on March 19, 2022, Omar entered the Dar Al-Tawheed Islamic Centre and applied bear spray toward congregants while swinging a hatchet. After finishing one of the spray cans and pulling out another, several worshippers rushed Omar and successfully subdued him until police arrived.
