Terrorism in Moscow: The Money Behind the Crocus City Hall Attack
Attack Profile
In early March 2024, the US government provided Russian authorities with information regarding a potential terrorist threat against large gatherings and concerts in Moscow. A few weeks later, on March 22, four gunmen attacked the Crocus City Hall concert venue in Krasnogorsk, Moscow Oblast, Russia, killing over 140 people and injuring an additional 500. The Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISIL-KP) claimed responsibility for the attack, which is the group’s first mass casualty operation outside of South Asia. Russian officials eventually acknowledged ISIL-KP’s involvement after initially insisting that Ukraine and Western nations were behind the assault.
While obtaining accurate reporting from Russia is challenging, this article will explore the attack's estimated costs and financing details.
