Hello Insight Monitor subscribers! While many of you are hopefully finding some time to slow down and enjoy the summer, the world of global security and terrorist financing hasn’t missed a beat. July brought a wave of new developments, fresh insights, and new initiatives.
Before we dive in we are happy to share that this past month Jessica’s article on open-source financial intelligence (OSINT FININT) was published in the Canadian Foreign Policy Journal.
More big news this month: the RCMP charged four men — including two active Canadian military members — in connection with an anti-government terrorist plot. It’s a case that’s both unprecedented and unsurprising and reflects the ongoing rise of ideologically motivated extremism in Canada. Jessica discussed the case on Power and Politics or The Current. As always this month, we published our latest Global Terrorist Financing Reports, highlighting major developments from the past month.

Articles
In July, we wrapped up our series on Al-Shabaab’s financial operations, highlighting the obfuscation tactics the group uses. The full series is now available in one article, Tracking Terrorist Financing, which follows our terrorist financing blueprint. We marked the 20th anniversary of the 7/7 London bombings with a look at the how the attack was financed and its influence on counterterrorism policy in the UK and EU. Next, we examined how the Houthis continue to maintain strong financial networks despite recent intensified sanctions and military pressure. Also, Jessica and Stephen Reimer, associate fellow with RUSI’s CFS, sat down to unpack the FATF’s new terrorist financing report, offering insight into its findings and implications. Lastly, Jessica introduced her new initiative: Dismantling Defenses, a new tracker documenting government actions by the Trump administration that ultimately erode U.S. and global financial defenses.
